MYTH 1: MY LAWN LOOKS BAD, I NEED TO REPLACE MY WHOLE LAWN.
Lawns need three things to be healthy: sun, water and food. Most of the time, once we get those three things right, the lawn will fill back in. It might take a few months or occasionally a couple of growing seasons but if you’re patient, you might not need to spend thousands of dollars replacing the lawn.
MYTH 2: I’M GOING TO SAVE MONEY BY CUTTING BACK ON MY WATERING.
This can be a very expensive way to save money. Most of the damage we see in the spring actually started the summer before when the lawn was under-watered. The roots of the grass get damaged by heat stress and then when we have a cold winter, the weakened grass gets killed out. We have seen many people over the years save a few hundred dollars in the summer and then spend several thousand dollars replacing their lawn in the spring.
MYTH 3: I SHOULD TURN OFF MY SPRINKLERS IN THE WINTER.
Even in the winter, our soils lose water to evaporation so we need to water a few minutes each week. When we have our cold weather in the teens or sometimes the single digits, it is important for your lawn and your plants that the soil have moisture in it. The moisture protects the plants’ root systems by preventing the soil from dropping far below the 32-degree freezing point. Dry soil can be very damaging to plants and grass.
MYTH 4: I’VE REALLY THINNED MY TREE; MY GRASS WILL BE HEALTHY NOW.
Our grasses need around 6 hours of direct sunlight for them to be healthy or spread. Thinning a tree will make the tree healthier but the filtered sunlight actually doesn’t help the grass underneath it very much. The most important sunlight is either from the morning or afternoon sun so the higher you can raise the canopy of tree, the more direct sunlight your lawn will get and the healthier it will be.
MYTH 5: I CAN’T HAVE A NICE LAWN IN THE SUMMER UNLESS I BREAK MY WATER RESTRICTIONS.
Two days per week of watering is all we need in the summer for most lawns. The summer months are when we see the most lawn growth. The secret is to water several times in the morning in short bursts each of our two days. That allows the water to soak in and get down to the roots of the grass.
