How Much Should You Water Your Lawn in Spring?

A North Texas Lawn Watering Guide for Plano, Richardson, and North Dallas (download our guide)

Spring in North Texas is when your lawn wakes up.

As temperatures warm and grass begins to green up, the watering habits you establish now will determine how well your lawn handles the intense heat of summer.

Water too little and your lawn struggles to establish strong roots.

Water too much and you encourage shallow roots, fungus, and wasted water.

The goal is simple: deep, efficient watering that builds a resilient lawn.

At Village Green Lawn & Pest, we’ve helped homeowners across Plano, Richardson, and North Dallas care for their lawns for more than 45 years. Below is our recommended spring watering schedule for North Texas lawns.

The Recommended Spring Watering Schedule for North Texas Lawns

For most lawns in our area, watering once per week using a cycle-and-soak method produces the best results.

Standard Spray Head Sprinklers

Run your sprinkler system once per week in three short cycles:

  • 2:00 AM
  • 4:00 AM
  • 6:00 AM

Each cycle should run 10 minutes per zone.

This approach allows water to soak into North Texas clay soil instead of running off.

Rotary Sprinkler Heads

Rotary heads distribute water more slowly.

If your system uses rotors, double the run time.

Example schedule:

  • 2:00 AM – 20 minutes
  • 4:00 AM – 20 minutes
  • 6:00 AM – 20 minutes

Shaded Areas

Lawns under trees require significantly less water.

Heavy shade reduces evaporation and slows turf growth, meaning these areas may need 50% less water.

Overwatering shaded turf is one of the most common reasons lawns thin out in North Texas neighborhoods.

Pro Tip: Use the Seasonal Adjust Feature on Your Sprinkler Controller

Many modern sprinkler controllers include a Seasonal Adjust (sometimes called Water Budget) feature. A simple way to set your spring watering is to program your controller for your normal summer watering schedule, then set the Seasonal Adjust to about 50% during the spring. This automatically reduces watering time across all zones without having to reprogram each one individually. As temperatures increase later in the season, you can gradually increase the Seasonal Adjust percentage. If you’re not sure how to adjust your controller, watch our quick walkthrough showing how to program your sprinkler controller for spring watering.

Drip Irrigation Systems

Landscape beds with drip irrigation should run:

10 minutes per cycle, three days per week

Because drip systems vary widely in output, periodically check soil moisture and adjust as needed.

Why Early Morning Watering Works Best

Watering before sunrise is critical for several reasons.

Reduced evaporation

Temperatures are cooler and wind is typically calm.

Deeper soil penetration

Clay soils absorb water slowly. Multiple cycles allow water to soak deeper.

Lower disease risk

Grass dries quickly once the sun rises, reducing fungal problems.

This cycle-and-soak approach is widely recommended by turf specialists across Texas because it mimics natural rainfall patterns.

Understanding North Texas Soil

One reason watering advice online often fails in our area is because most recommendations assume sandy soil.

North Texas is different.

Our soil is dominated by heavy clay, which behaves differently when watered.

Clay soil:

  • Absorbs water slowly
  • Holds moisture longer
  • Can create runoff if watered too quickly

That’s why short cycles spaced out over several hours work so well.

Signs Your Lawn May Be Experiencing Drought Stress

Even with a watering schedule in place, it’s important to monitor your lawn.

Signs of drought stress include:

• Grass turning bluish-gray
• Footprints remaining visible after walking across the lawn
• Grass blades folding or curling
• Areas thinning out in full sun

If you notice these symptoms during unusually warm spring weather, your lawn may require slight adjustments.

How Much Water Does Bermuda Grass Need?

Bermuda grass — the most common lawn type in Plano and North Dallas — generally requires about 1 inch of water per week during spring.

That includes both rainfall and irrigation.

As temperatures climb into summer, water demand increases significantly.

This is why building strong root systems early in the season is so important.

How to Program Your Sprinkler System for Spring

Many homeowners struggle to properly program their sprinkler controllers.

Different systems have different menus, zones, and cycle settings, which can make programming confusing.

We created a short video to walk you through the process.

The video explains exactly how to set up the recommended cycle-and-soak schedule for spring watering.

A Healthy Lawn Is the Result of Consistency

Watering is one of the most important factors in lawn health.

When combined with proper fertilization, weed control, and seasonal care, a consistent watering schedule helps lawns:

• develop deeper roots
• resist drought stress
• maintain density and color
• recover faster from summer heat

At Village Green, our lawn health technicians monitor turf conditions throughout the year and document changes during each visit so we can keep your lawn moving in the right direction.
