Important Freeze Warning & Tips to Protect Your Plants Damage

Ready for Arctic Air? Two cold fronts, then lows in the teens, are in the forecast for North Texas, and now is the time to prepare.

Below are our tried-and-true freeze warning tips to help protect your lawn and landscape from our first winter blast of the new year. If you prefer you can watch a quick video on our YouTube Channel.

WATER YOUR LAWN AND LANDSCAPE
It might seem unbelievable, but the best thing you can do to protect your plants is to ensure you have watered them properly before the arctic air arrives in North Texas. Plants with moisture do better in extreme cold than those that are under-watered. If you are unsure how much you should water this winter, download our Winter Watering Guide.

COVER YOUR SENSITIVE PLANTS
Make sure you use a cloth sheet (old sheets make a great cover,) and do NOT use plastic. You want to trap heat against the ground, and plastic doesn’t help. Instead, when the sun comes out, it will make things worse by scorching your plants. If you have pansies, you don’t have to worry about covering them to keep them alive (but covering can prevent their blooms from being damaged.)

TURN OFF YOUR SPRINKLER SYSTEM
All cities in our area require a freeze sensor on sprinkler systems. If you aren’t sure about yours, the simple solution to preventing dangerous icing is to turn it off. Still, please remember to turn it back on after this cold snap so your lawn is correctly watered during the winter.
