If you live in Plano, Richardson, Frisco, or McKinney, you’ve probably noticed something already: Your lawn is waking up — and so are the weeds.
Over the past few weeks, North Texas has experienced major temperature swings. We’ve seen highs in the 70s and 80s, followed by a hard freeze that brought temperatures down into the low 20s with ice on the ground for nearly two weeks.
Those swings matter.
And what happens in your lawn right now will largely determine how it looks all summer long.
What We’re Seeing in North Texas Lawns Right Now
1. Rescue Grass
Rescue grass is one of the first grassy weeds we’re seeing this season.
- Dark green
- Wide blade
- Grows faster than your turf
If you’re seeing a lot of rescue grass, it often means a fall pre-emergent wasn’t applied — or didn’t hold.
If it’s showing up in patches, it may indicate irrigation coverage gaps.
2. Wild Carrot
Wild carrot is another early broadleaf weed popping up right now.
Unlike rescue grass, wild carrot isn’t always prevented by fall pre-emergent applications. It typically requires targeted spot treatment.
3. What Should Be Happening Right Now?
In early spring, a professional lawn health program should include:
- Spring pre-emergent application (such as prodiamine)
- Spot treatment of visible weeds
- Fire ant prevention, if needed
- Monitoring soil and turf response after winter stress
If that’s not happening — or you’re unsure — now is the time to evaluate your plan.
What’s Coming Next: Fungal Risk & Freeze Damage
It’s still a bit early for fungal issues, but as temperatures continue to warm, homeowners with St. Augustine and Zoysia lawns should be watching for:
- Brown patch (also called large patch)
- Circular brown areas with a ring-like edge
Over the past several years, North Texas has experienced warm winters followed by sudden deep freezes. Those temperature swings can cause significant stress — especially in lawns that were already weakened the prior year.
As lawns come fully out of dormancy in April, you’ll have a clearer picture of whether this winter caused damage.
Why Spring Is the Most Important Season for Your Lawn
Spring is not just another treatment window.
It sets the stage.
What happens in the next few weeks determines:
- Weed pressure all summer
- Root development
- Disease resistance
- Overall lawn thickness and color
Waiting until late spring often means playing catch-up.
