Chinch Bugs: The Threat That Escalates Fast
Chinch bugs are the reason Ken Hyatt created Village Green’s insect program years ago. These tiny insects show up in July and August when North Texas temperatures stay above 95 degrees and humidity drops. For St. Augustine lawns — common in Richardson, McKinney, and surrounding areas — chinch bugs can do devastating damage.
The first sign is usually a dry patch near concrete: a sidewalk, driveway, or curb edge. The patch looks like drought stress at first glance, but it keeps growing even when watering is adequate. That’s the telltale sign of chinch bug activity.
We caught chinch bugs on a Richardson customer’s St. Augustine lawn in early July because our tech spotted that edge pattern near the driveway during a routine visit. We treated immediately. The lawn recovered by September. Without early spotting, that damage would have spread through August and likely wiped out most of the turf.
Chinch bugs only appear every few years, but in bad years, Ken has seen them wipe out entire lawn sections. The key is catching them early.
